The Tall Guy

Film Poster

One of the early American/English style of films that eventually evolved into 'Four Weddings And A Funeral'. This movie always reminds me of my brother, in fact I think I can safely say that if you have seen this film you'll understand perfectly the kind of humour that both Jem and I like. However, It's very British in style, so if you don't like darkly, sardonic, scene based comedy, then this might not be for you.

Jeff Goldblum plays a struggling American actor (another one!) trying to hold his life together in mid-eighties London. His world seems to make no sense until chance throws him a life-line in the form of Emma Thompson who plays a hospital nurse with whom he almost instantly falls in love.

The humour is deeply absurd and Mel Smith (of Alas Smith & Jones/Not The Nine O'Clock News fame) who directed it, makes sure that no matter how silly the proceedings become, all the actors deadpan their role beautifully with the sole exception of Goldblum (who looks around in stark disbelief at the events that simultaneously wreck and shape his world).

Brilliant if only for the lines 'Fancy a fuck?' 'No thanks, just had one'
