Early Technicolour films sometimes sour the eye with their bright naivety but in this instantce, it's use is bloody brilliant. Shot partly in black and white as well as colour, the story follows a love affair between a british pilot (played very urbanely by David Niven) who escapes death to fall in love with an american girl at the height of WWII. All might sound rosy if it were not for the fact that an angel appears to Niven (only) and explains that he should have died in his plane. There follows a fantastic semi-courtroom battle between Niven and Nirvana to see where he should remain.
Other great performances by this coolest of cool actors include 'Around The World In 80 Days' and 'The Guns Of Navarone' but it's in this film, that I think he truly hits the mark.
